Concept and objectives of teaching, learner characteristics, the factors that shape effective instruction, teaching methods old and new, and how learning is evaluated in higher education.

Teaching: Concept, Objectives, Levels

Teaching is a deliberate, purposive activity carried out by a teacher to bring about desirable changes in the learner’s behaviour, knowledge, skills, and attitudes. It is a triadic process involving the teacher, the learner, and the content, bound together by continuous interaction and feedback.

Working definition

Teaching = a system of actions intended to induce learning, planned and executed with reference to specific objectives and evaluated against those objectives.

Objectives of teaching

  • Transmission of knowledge, culture, and values across generations.
  • Development of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor abilities (the three domains of Bloom’s Taxonomy).
  • Development of critical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving capacity rather than rote memory alone.
  • Preparing learners for social, economic, and civic life.

Levels of teaching

Indian pedagogy texts commonly describe three levels of teaching, each associated with a classical model of instruction:

Characteristics and basic requirements of teaching

  • It is a bipolar (teacher–learner) and continuous process.
  • It is goal-directed and planned, not incidental.
  • It requires diagnosis of learner needs before instruction and evaluation after it.
  • It demands mastery of subject matter, communication skill, and knowledge of learner psychology on the teacher’s part.

Learner’s Characteristics

Effective teaching begins with understanding who the learner is. Higher education deals mainly with adolescent and adult learners, whose characteristics differ substantially.

Key idea

Malcolm Knowles’ theory of andragogy holds that adults are self-directed, bring a reservoir of experience to learning, are ready to learn what is relevant to their social role, and are motivated internally rather than by external reward.

Individual differences

No two learners are alike. Teaching must account for differences in intelligence, aptitude, interest, learning style (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic), pace of learning, personality, and socio-economic and cultural background.

Factors Affecting Teaching

Teaching effectiveness is shaped by six broad clusters of factors:

  • Teacher-related: subject mastery, communication skill, personality, attitude towards learners, use of teaching aids.
  • Learner-related: motivation, readiness, prior knowledge, attention span, learning style.
  • Support material: textbooks, reference material, models, charts, audio-visual aids.
  • Instructional facilities: classrooms, laboratories, libraries, technology infrastructure.
  • Learning environment: physical comfort as well as the psychological climate — freedom to question, mutual respect, absence of fear.
  • Institution: policies, culture, leadership, and the value it places on teaching quality.

Methods of Teaching in Higher Education

Off-line vs. On-line methods

Off-line methods rely on face-to-face classroom instruction. On-line methods deliver instruction through digital platforms, and in the Indian context the three flagship initiatives are frequently tested:

  • SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) — India’s national MOOC platform offering free online courses from school to post-graduate level.
  • SWAYAM PRABHA — a group of free-to-air educational DTH TV channels, one channel per subject/level, telecast round the clock.
  • MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) — large-scale, open-access online courses, often free, with structured modules and assessments.

Evaluation Systems

Elements of evaluation

Evaluation in the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)

CBCS combines continuous internal assessment (assignments, tests, seminars) with end-semester examinations, and grades performance using credit points and a cumulative/semester grade point average (CGPA/SGPA) rather than aggregate marks alone.

Computer-based testing and innovations

  • Computer-based testing (CBT) allows objective, rapid, and tamper-resistant assessment, as used in UGC-NET itself.
  • Innovations include online proctored examinations, adaptive testing (difficulty adjusts to the test-taker), e-portfolios, and open-book/take-home assessments for higher-order skills.
