Development and Environment

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs, 2000–2015), an eight-goal UN framework targeting poverty, education, and health, were succeeded by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, 2015–2030) — 17 goals balancing economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection, adopted by all UN member states.

Human and Environment Interaction

Anthropogenic activities — those caused by human action, such as industrialisation, deforestation, urbanisation, and intensive agriculture — alter natural ecosystems, deplete resources, and are the primary drivers of contemporary environmental change, including climate change.

Categories of waste

Solid, liquid, biomedical, hazardous, and electronic (e-waste) — each requiring a different, regulated method of collection, treatment, and disposal.

Climate change

The long-term shift in global temperature and weather patterns, driven largely by greenhouse gas emissions, carries socio-economic dimensions (food and water security, migration, livelihoods) and political dimensions (international negotiation over responsibility and mitigation targets).

Impacts of Pollutants on Human Health

Air pollution is linked to respiratory and cardiovascular disease; contaminated water to gastrointestinal and vector-borne diseases; soil contamination to bioaccumulation of toxins in the food chain; and noise pollution to hearing loss and stress-related disorders.

Natural and Energy Resources

Renewable: Solar, Wind, Hydro, Geothermal, Biomass. Non-renewable: Nuclear (technically low-carbon but fuel-limited) and fossil-fuel-based sources. Forests function as a resource base and as a carbon sink, making conservation doubly important.

Natural Hazards and Disasters: Mitigation Strategies

Mitigation combines structural measures (early-warning systems, resilient infrastructure) with non-structural measures (land-use planning, community preparedness, insurance), guided in India by the National Disaster Management Authority framework.
